A tweet commenting on Indian Food turned into a war by users yesterday. Tweet said "Indian food is terrible and we pretend it isn't," said Mr. Tom Nichols.
Mr. Nichols is an international affairs professor. He teaches at the US Naval War College in Rhode Island. Reports said that he posted his opinion after another Twitter user had asked for "controversial food opinions".
His tweet was viewed as a tasteless generalization by critics and debate was further fumed when his comment was taken as a mark of racism. Many people tweeted on it later about how food plays a role in overall immigrant experience. As many people in the US have experienced racism in relation to food.
Some noted that any international food in the US is often considered as ethnic food and is marketed as cheap eats.
Many Indian twitter users came in support of Indian food and tweeted about its diversity and authentic ingredients. Some tweets also claimed that one needs to have a wider experience of food tasting and palates before making any such comment. Mr. Nichols later commented that he has only eaten Indian food at US and UK restaurants.
The hashtag #MyFavoriteIndianFood started trending after the tweet drew attention in Indian Media
