Yellow vest movement began in France in October 2018. It is a populist political movement for economic injustice.
The movement started with French motorists in rural areas who have long commutes and were against raised fuel prices. The protest is called a Yellow vest movement as the protestors wore a yellow vest that they are required to keep in their vehicles to wear in the case of emergency as per 2008 French Law.
The movement was initially against the rising fuel price and high cost of living. For rural and Peri-urban areas, it further claimed the burden of government tax reforms on the working and middle class.
The protestors have demanded lower fuel taxes, a minimum wage increase, implementation of Citizens’ initiative referendums, reintroduction of solidarity tax on wealth as well as resignation of President Macron.
In November 2018, a list of total 42 demand was made. It was made public as well as was shared on social media. It covered a wide range of topics including social, democratic and fiscal justice.
The protest involved demonstrations and road and fuel depots blockage. These extreme actions converted it into violent riots. It is being considered as one of the most violent riots since May 1968.
