The Chinese State media is now trying to downplay the election results of District elections in Hong Kong. The results were in favor of pro-democracy camp and scored a landslide victory. The government had hopes that people they considered “silent majority” will support them. But results surprised them “totally”. On the contrary, many pro-Beijing candidates had to lose their council seats. This “unhappiness” expressed by public was acknowledged by Carrie Lam, Chief Executive. During her first public appearance after the results were announced, she said that people were having concerns regarding “deficiencies in governance”. According to her, they were not happy with the time taken to address the issues leading to “unstable environment”.
Many state media outlets reacted differently. They either made no reference at all of the results or claimed that “tampering” took place. State broadcaster CCTV's daily news programme Xinwen Lianbo remained silent on the issue, instead accused US for interfering.
The state’s press agency, Xinhua said that elections were conducted during weekend but about the recent protest violence, said that there is an urgent need to restore order.
However, Global Times was the one covering election results in detail. Some reports also said - "no need to over-interpret the victory of pan-democrats".
The victory of pro-democracy camp wasn’t welcomed by Chinese media with “open arms”!
