The annual United Nations International Conference - COP25 is to be held in Madrid, Spain from 2 – 13 December 2019. Around 25,000 worldwide delegates are expected to attend the event.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, António Guterres, UN Secretary-General expresses concern stating "the point of no return is no longer over the horizon".
He is going to address the attendees on climate emergency that the world is facing, owing to which countries shall increase their carbon-cutting ambitions. Further, no new coal-fired power stations must be built after 2020 and countries shall end their subsidies for fossil fuel extraction.
The charity, Save the children, says that 33 million people (more than half of which are children) are at emergency levels of food insecurity due to floods drought landslides and cyclones. The recent two strongest cyclones made the situation worse in the African continent as they affected the same region just a week apart.
Earlier, Brazil was to host the COP25. However, the policies of Brazil's right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro on Amazon region was criticized extremely by environmentalist due to which it moved to Chile. But later due to weeks of civic disturbances in Chile it moved finally to Spain.
The event will be marked by the attendance of 50 high-ranking authorities. Grassroots climate activists will participate in parallel events.
The key point of the discussion and debate of the meeting is supposed to revolve around Paris Agreement that attempts to combat the climate crisis world is facing today.
