President Trump said in a speech to the New York Economic Club today that his daughter, Ivanka, has created 14 million new jobs in person. The president announced this figure— so incredibly ridiculous it would embarrass a pronouncement from the Stalin era— and then repeated it twice as the crowd politely applauded.
After Trump took office, the entire U.S. economy has generated fewer than 6 million new jobs. Yet Trump credits his wife with producing more than 200% of all new jobs in the U.S. directly. It's like capitalism on the supply side, but for patriarchal nepotism.
How she did this remains a somewhat confusing subject. The plan involves the "Pledge to America's Employees," which aims to establish some arbitrary number of training and other incentives by the chief executives of different companies. On its official White House website, you can read about this initiative, but the specifics are scarce even by a White House messaging site's standards. There seems to be no other approach here than Ivanka asking entrepreneurs to pledge job creation.
Ivanka reported that this initiative generated 6.3 million jobs last October. Lydia DePillis surveyed some of the businesses that contributed to this figure, and several admitted that they credited the Ivanka initiative with all actual (or, in some cases, hypothetical) job openings.
In January, Donald Trump celebrated this program, saying, "My daughter has created millions of jobs." It has now more than tripled to 14 million. As Trump said to his crowd of fans, "14 million and up!"It's almost certainly true that Trump says that the number of jobs created by his daughter is increasing. It could surpass the entire workforce by next year.
