No warning issued when White Island exploded

Five people have been confirmed dead, 31 are in hospital with injury and eight are still missing after unexpected volcanic eruptions off New Zealand's east coast on Whakaari / White Island.

The eruption was identified as impulsive and short-lived by volcanologists at GeoNet, which runs a geological risk monitoring system, with an ash plume growing to more than three kilometers above the vent.
