Greta Thunberg has been chosen for the Nordic Council Environmental Award in Sweden. She is a 16-year-old Swedish citizen who has pioneered the protest against the world’s political class for their negligence in anticipating and countering global climatic crises.
She refused to take the award, which was accompanied by a monetary award of US $52,000, a spokesperson on her behalf conveyed the Stockholm ceremony of her inclination in refusing the award.
The climate activist whilst refusing the award personally also delivered a message that the world needs decisive actions against climate change and not more awards, she reiterated her stance that the political class needs to listen to the voice of science more and not just deal in superficial natures of the awards.
Thunberg was also a front runner for the Nobel peace prize this year, which was eventually awarded to the Ethiopian Prime Minister. Last month she had sailed from Sweden to New York for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), citing the carbon footprint involved with flight travel and the need of the hour to reduce our carbon footprints if we have to have a chance of surviving on this planet sustainable for the future.
In an Instagram post, Greta clarified her stance of not accepting the award stating that she was in California at the time of the ceremony and for her to travel to the event wouldn’t be possible in the limited time frame and her disinclination towards accepting award by stating that the world today could do without one more award, but it cannot survive without the actions needed by humankind to save the planet.
The political class of the world seems to have taken notice of the voices now which ones fell into deaf ears, the change is imminent. The more genuine we provide individuals to deal with, it is the most suitable solution for humanity to adopt.
