Increase in global infertility rates

Infertility is a serious health issue worldwide. Infertility is caused due to an issue with one of the partners or combination of factors that prevent pregnancy. Millions of people of reproductive age get affected by infertility worldwide. It has been reported in 2020 that 48 million couples and 186 million individuals live with infertility globally. Sperm separation systems are used for separation of motile sperm cells from debris and non-motile cells from the semen sample. This technique is used for analysis of sperm quality and sperm manipulation along with the use of the purified sperm population for the treatment of male infertility. This technology encompasses the Wang tube system which is used for isolation of organism free, normal chromatin, morphologically normal and highly motile sperms, thus increasing the demand of sperm separation systems market.  The viability of sperm is important for in vitro fertilization. The selection of fertile and motile sperms are suitable for use in infertility treatment or to prevent sex linked inherited diseases. There are different factors that are contributing to the increase in infertility rate.  A few causes of infertility in men include disruption of testicular or ejaculatory function which affects sperm production, unhealthy habits such as heavy alcohol consumption, smoking, anabolic steroids and illicit drug use.  Other factors are related to the treatments such as use of certain medications, cancer treatment involving use of chemotherapy. Hormonal and genetic disorders such as Klinefelter’s syndrome, myotonic dystrophy may also result in low or no sperm production. Major cause of infertility in female is age, as with age the fertility rate decreases. About 1 in 6 couples in which the woman’s age is 35 and older have fertility problems.

Aging decreases fertility due to fewer eggs left or unhealthy eggs in ovary.  Women are more likely to have health conditions with aging. It also increases a woman’s chances of miscarriage.  The other factors that contribute to the infertility in woman are smoking, excessive alcohol use, extreme weight gain or loss and extreme emotional and physical stress. According to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Health 2020, about 85% of couples will be able to conceive in their first year of trying. According to United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), southern Europe, Eastern Europe and Eastern Asia are amongst few of the regions with the lowest fertility rates in the world. According to World Health Organization 1 in 4 couple’s in developing countries are affected by infertility.  In the U.S 9% of men aged between 15 to 44 and 10% of women falling under the same age group, are experiencing infertility. Thus, these factors are increasing the demand of sperm separation systems market.

There is considerable investment by government bodies for the development of sperm separation systems in the U.S. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Germplasm and Gamete Physiology Laboratory, which is situated in Maryland, has developed a system that enables the separation of spermatozoa that bears the X and Y chromosome. This helps the livestock owners to separate the X and Y spermatozoa to predetermine the sex of various animals when the sample is sorted for insemination. It is based on a technique that uses a dye of fluorescent nature which sticks to the DNA. Therefore, the rise in investment in animal sperm separation methods by both private and public entities is expected to further the growth of the sperm separation systems market in North America.
