The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a paradigm shift in the approach towards health and wellbeing amongst individuals. Government bodies are increasingly utilizing lockdown and social distancing measures to prevent the spread of the virus. Despite the rolling out of COVID-19 vaccines in several countries, cases have been rising in countries like the U.S., India, the UK and Germany, amongst others. In Africa and South America, the threat of yellow fever still looms, and the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the focus on vaccination drives. The situation where yellow fever victims contract COVID-19 can lead to complications in the future, and hence, yellow fever vaccines are being made increasingly available for public use. As international travel is going back to the pre-pandemic situation, yellow fever vaccines are also being mandated for travel to countries that are categorized under the high risk category for yellow fever. The primary issue with yellow fever is that the onset of symptoms is slow, and it is highly difficult to diagnose the cases in the absence of sophisticated methods. Majority of the cases are in countries that have an underdeveloped healthcare system, which in turn increases the chances of non detection of cases. The pandemic is therefore expected to have a huge impact on the global yellow fever vaccine market, as the production of these vaccines are expected to pick up in the coming years.

The campaign was supported by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the WHO. The standard dose of the vaccine was primarily provided to children between the ages of nine months and two years, and people who were suffering from medical conditions. In 2017, the Brazilian government had sought the support of the PAHO for the control of yellow fever causing mosquitoes in Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, and Espírito Santo.
