The United States auto industry has been seeing the potential of growth of the wireless and internet connectivity for a long time even before this was a trend and this is why the communications industry had allotted a spectrum to the auto industry so that they can use it to develop the communications between the different auto models that they produce and develop however this has not been properly utilized by the auto sector of the nation.
Chairman of Federal Communication Commission Ajit Pai has made some headlines as he has suggested changing the allotment of the spectrum of frequency of 5.9 GHz which was reserved exclusively for the automakers as per the authorities that decided this in 1999, this was done so that the carmakers could develop technology that would enable vehicles to communicate with each other to make the roads safer but this has not been done and utilized as of recently as the technology is still being developed and will be ready in 2020 or 2021 so the carmakers are now opposing the splitting of the spectrum which will give them less bandwidth to play around with.
So there are some major issues to come from the auto industry, and the telecom industry and the communications industry should be ready for a serious backlash from the auto sector as they are in need of this bandwidth as the autonomous driving is being developed. So let’s see where this fight goes and how the auto sector gets what it wants.
