The Australian Megafires Have Damaged the Ozone Layer

The smoke-induced chemical reactions from the wildfires in Australia’s Black Summer have caused the level of ozone above the mid-southern hemisphere to drop by 13 percent.

A new analysis revealed that the record-breaking fires in Australia in the summers of 2019 and 2020 blasted such high smoke that even the stratosphere of the ozone layer was damaged.
