The United Arab Emirates has been appointed to chair a UN committee tasked with promoting the peaceful use of space.

Omran Sharaf, the Emirati engineer who managed the country's successful Mars mission, will serve as the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space's director for 2022 and next year.
