City officials of Barcelona possibly have decided to take a major decision in order to curb unacceptably high levels of air and noise pollution. The conclusion they made was – Ban cars. The proposal first came up in the year 1980, was never implemented. If everything goes just smooth, the idea will soon become a reality.
The Superblock Scheme
Barcelona is a city built on grid system. The superblock scheme combines all the nine city blocks only to close them for the traffic. These blocks are blocked in a unique manner, that is with benches and plant pots. Space is reserved for green spaces and play areas. Cycle lanes are also introduced. Most of the parking areas are replaced by seating areas. The entire idea is to add to the greenery and includes more open spaces with plants. There is a total of 6 such areas and officials are planning to include 11 more soon. If the plan is successful, 500 more such spaces will be included in the future. Such ‘car free’ zones are the ‘need of the hour’.
The eco-friendly idea faced its share of criticism. Many local residents opposed the plan and raised concerns about local businesses and parking. Many political opponents also dismissed the idea.
Salvador Rueda, the head of Barcelona Urban Ecology Agency and was the first one to propose the idea, explained – “After campaigning against it for more than a year, those who were most opposed are now among the most enthusiastic”.
Car-free zones are one fantastic idea and should be implemented in all countries with higher levels of pollution.
