Netflix has a public image for elevated-quality entertainment, but these vacation movies tend to be small-budget and cringe-worthy. As such, many fans are wondering why it would even bother Netflix to make and promote them, especially if they could never get the same recognition as the more popular offers of the service. Over the past few years, Netflix has released many holiday movies.
With the release of the rom-com A Christmas Prince, Netflix first joined the holiday film business in 2017. The film caught a lot of press, but it wasn't all good.
In any case, by launching A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding in 2018 and A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby in December 2019, Netflix decided to follow through with the series.
Users also saw a spike in the original holiday films from Netflix in 2018 with titles such as The Holiday Calendar, The Princess Switch, and The Christmas Chronicles.
In November 2019, Netflix decided to start a new film every week. Films like Let It Snow, Klaus, The Knight Before Christmas, and Holiday in the Wild got a lot of buzzes, and viewers are starting to see Netflix as a platform that can deliver on vacation movies.
How does Netflix make these vacation movies money?
Netflix makes a lot of its money from streaming packages sales, with subscriptions ranging between $8.99 and $15.99 a month. Netflix offers a large range of original high-quality content that can't be found anywhere else to encourage people to sign up.
Of course, viewers question whether these low-budget holiday movies are worth it for Netflix, particularly as the company could easily spend the money on shows and films that are objectively better. It does not seem, though, that Netflix banks on these cheesy travel titles to win awards and accolades.
Netflix most likely knows that the films are of somewhat low quality, but at the same time they get attention from people, which seems to be what Netflix wants at the end of the day. Karen Schaler, A Christmas Prince's actress, said of her script: "People had so much fun picking on the film. They rip it apart, and I think it's great because what I'm trying to do is bring joy and happiness to people. I take it all as a joke and people were just so happy to watch and chat about it.”
Will Netflix in the holiday film business beat Hallmark?
Seeing that Hallmark has been making holiday films for decades now, Netflix seems to have recognized that there is a large audience that is thirsty for them.
Whether Netflix will be able to surpass Hallmark as the number one place for holiday movies remains to be seen. Hallmark has been beating Netflix in this business so far. Just a few movies will be sold by Netflix, but Hallmark has plans to release 40 of them. Sadly, Hallmark won't go down so fast.
"We own Christmas," said Michelle Vicary, senior marketing vice president at Hallmark, in 2017. "We're going to do it in a bigger and better way and talk to the spirit of the holiday that I don't think any of our competitors are doing."
