Are staple technologies such as a keyboard heading towards mass extinction? Is the voice command technology going to become more widely used? These are the questions that are haunting many minds and answers may sound confusing as keyboards are equally popular as voice command. Many futurists have claimed that in near future, we won’t be able to see more of computer mice, keyboards or any button device. Still many believe that the extinction will be gradual.
Voice technology is like a perfect bridge between humans and computers. A venture capitalist, Mark Tluszcz told CNBC - “What’s clear to me today is that the keyboard in five years will be gone as an input device”. He holds a record of successfully predicting technology. However, many other tech experts have moderate outlook on this. They believe that voice interfaces have many limitations that are difficult to handle. One biggest challenge is noise pollution. Though voice assistants are becoming better at ignoring background noise, many people have experienced blunders while using it in various public settings.
Voice command technology is being used in many fields successfully. People are now installing voice assistance in their four wheelers. It ensures safety of the driver while driving. Instead of typing or turning a nob, the driver can directly tell the car, whatever task is to be done.
Another important application of voice assistance is in improving military technology. F-35 fighter aircraft is having speech recognition system using which a pilot is able to give voice commands to the aircraft.
There are many areas where voice assistance is being used and that doesn’t mean that it is going to knock out keyboards overnight.
