The ongoing French protest marked a year anniversary this Sunday. The protest was initially against high taxes however later encompassed a wider set of complaints against the president, Emmanuel Macron’s government. Five suburban railway stations and twenty-nine metro stations remained closed on that day. Though following the protest against fuel prices, the government announced tax breaks worth billions. But Yellow vests were not satisfied with the proposal.
Dozens of yellow vests gathered around Galeries Lafayette to protest. Protestors referred to the store as the consumerist temple. Several were arrested after they were removed from the building and were staged protesting peacefully. Different figures for the number of protestors were given by interior ministry and Gilets Jaunes i.e. 28000 and 44000 respectively. Cars were turned upside down; barricades were put on fire by protestors. Police used Tear gas and baton charges against the protestors. Protestors damaged several tourist places as well.
Macron government also arranged debates at town hall to discuss policy choices but the majority of yellow vests boycotted the consultations stating that the government is taking their demands off the table and prejudging them. Millions of people took part in consultations at the town hall and several provided suggestions on online websites.
For Macron's presidency, the protest has been one of the toughest challenges.
