The mysterious mushroom was found by a fungus fan in 1988. After 3 decades of discovery the “phantom mushroom” species is under threat of extinction.
The mushroom was first sighted in the Hokkaido prefecture’s Mount Tosshozan situated in Asahikawa. Japan conducts a competition for Intriguing Fungi annually. This star mushroom won the fifth place in the first edition of the Intriguing Mushroom competition.
