The latest trend in the fashion industry includes using AI to predict fashion trends in the future. The Artificial Intelligence system helps fashion firms in detecting patterns, size, color and combination of clothes from e-commerce websites and social media images. AI can thus help companies to work out on what is popular in both global and local markets. This will help the industry to work more sustainably by producing only what is likely to sell in the future. Figures estimate, UK bins about 300,000 tonnes of clothing every year. Experts hope the application of AI will help in reducing the waste produced by the UK fashion industry. The question however remains, can a computer predict next season’s style? Roi Shigematsu, Founder & CEO, Fashion Pocket reported on the latest AI application, “We’ve already collected more than 25 million pictures so that we can analyze the global trend of the clothing items in a very detailed way. Sources allege, people in Japan especially don’t wear blue. According to Lisa Chatterton of London College of Fashion, “Historically, it would have been the brands dictating what the fashion trends are for the next season. So the designers would be doing all of their research, that’s all changed. It’s no longer brand-centric, it’s consumer-centric.” Knowing the future of fashion can reduce waste by actually creating products that are in line with the feeds with consumer’s preferences will further reduce fashion waste in the future.
