The Congress has lost a friend and well-known Hindu scholar in Dwarkapeeth Shankaracharya Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati, who was vehemently opposed to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

Known as the "Congress Swami," Swami Swaroopanand attempted to take center stage in the Ramjanmabhumi-Babri Masjid controversy on a number of occasions, which alarmed the VHP, the BJP, and the RSS.
